Boardman, Ohio – Dylan’s House Breaks Ground on New Supportive Housing Duplex
Dylan’s House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals on the autism spectrum, has commenced construction on a new duplex in Boardman, Ohio, aimed at providing safe and supportive housing for adults with autism.
Project Details
The duplex, located off Woodfield Court, will feature four bedrooms on each side, accommodating up to eight adults. The project is expected to be completed within six to eight months and will offer around-the-clock caregiver support. This initiative serves as a model for future homes across the Mahoning Valley.
Community Involvement
Several community partners are contributing to the project, including:
- Sam and Donna Boak – Donated the land for the duplex.
- Ramunno Builders – Serving as the general contractor for the construction.
- Purple Cat – Will manage and staff the home upon completion.
- Trisha Howe – Executive Director of the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of the Valley, recognized the project as the 2026 “Project of the Year.”
Background
Dylan’s House was founded in 2022 by Amy and Kevin Shope in honor of their son, Dylan. After facing challenges in securing long-term care for Dylan, the Shopes purchased a home for him in Cornersburg and began seeking ways to support other families in need of safe housing for their adult children with autism. The organization operates entirely from private donations, charity, and fundraising, renovating or building homes for individuals deserving of a space of their own.
Urgent Need for Supportive Housing
The need for such housing is critical. According to the Autism Society of the Mahoning Valley, 87% of autistic adults live with their parents, yet only 22% wish to do so. Additionally, just 7% have access to the support services needed to live independently.
Getting Involved
Dylan’s House continues to raise funds for furniture, equipment, and operational needs. Volunteers are also needed to help prepare the home for occupancy. More information is available on their website.
